Your First Month of HYROX Training: Build the Basics

You do not need a race simulation on day one. Start with movement skills, manageable effort and a routine you can repeat.

The first month of HYROX training is an opportunity to learn how your body responds to a new mix of work. It is not a deadline for mastering every station. If you are starting in New City or elsewhere in Rockland County, a useful first step is to describe your current routine to a coach and build from there.

Begin with the pieces

HYROX combines running with functional stations. That does not mean every workout needs to recreate the whole race. Learning a movement while relatively fresh lets you focus on the setup and rhythm before adding the challenge of fatigue.

Ask a coach to help identify which skills are new to you. Your list might include how to use a rowing machine, carry weights with control or approach a sled. The appropriate load and amount of practice should reflect your experience, not a video of someone else’s competition.

Give each session a job

  • Aerobic practice: develop comfortable, repeatable movement at a pace suited to you.
  • Strength and skill: practice the movements and build the capacity to handle them well.
  • Combined practice: when appropriate, experience a short transition between running and a station.
  • Recovery: leave room to absorb the work and arrive ready to learn again.

These are roles a program can include, not a requirement to add four extra gym visits. Your coach can combine or separate them around your schedule.

A simple progression to discuss with your coach

First, get familiar. Learn the equipment and establish a starting effort you can describe. Take notes about what felt smooth and what needed explanation.

Next, repeat. Revisit those skills rather than replacing everything with a harder variation. Familiarity makes useful comparisons possible.

Then, connect a little work. A short, manageable combination can teach pacing without becoming a full race rehearsal.

Finally, review. Discuss attendance, recovery, confidence and movement quality before deciding what to increase. This is a coaching conversation, not a universal four week prescription.

Do not let the race clock write every workout

Going at maximum effort can hide whether your technique or pacing is improving. You should be able to explain why a session is hard and what it is meant to develop. ACSM’s 2026 resistance training update emphasizes that consistency and an individualized approach matter more than unnecessary complexity for most healthy adults. That is a useful reminder when building the strength side of a new routine. Read the ACSM update.
